Lincoln Paper and Tissue

Environmental Stewardship

Fast Fact:

Lincoln Paper and Tissue generates about 1/3 of the electricity it uses.

At Lincoln Paper and Tissue, environmental stewardship is more than an industry buzzword; it is a core part of our business model.

Lincoln Paper and Tissue's paper meets Federal requirements for 30% post-consumer fiber content as specified under the President's Executive Order on Recycling (sec 505b).  Recycling is a key focus in our ongoing innovations. By recycling waste sawdust from nearby sawmills to manufacture it's pulp, Lincoln Paper and Tissue avoids harvesting the equivalent annual growth on approximately 250,000 acres of timber each year.

By converting wood wastes and the biomass solids left after waste water treatment into steam and electricity, Lincoln Paper and Tissue annually saves over 9 million gallons of fuel oil, reducing air impacts and greenhouse gas emissions from the facility.  Valuable landfill space is also preserved by seeking beneficial uses for other solid wastes such as using lime residuals for agricultural purposes.

Earth-friendly processes are also key to our environmental commitment. The Company's envirO2TM oxygen bleaching process allows us to create low weight, bright white recycled papers without the use of elemental chlorine. This technology assures that Lincoln Paper and Tissue is in compliance with Maine's Dioxin regulations, the most stringent in the Country.  Results also show that discharges of AOX are among the very lowest in North America. Our waste water treatment plant ensures that process water is returned to the nearby Penobscot River in a manner that meets or exceeds strict State and federal regulations. Similarly, the mill's air emissions are less than one quarter of allowable limits.

Maintaining product quality, profitability and compliance with ever-evolving environmental regulations is a constant challenge. And it is one all of us at Lincoln Paper and Tissue are proud to continue to meet.
